Taafé Fanga: Karine Hamel, Estelle Lavoie et Julie de Lorimier (Montréal)

For ten years now, Karine Hamel, Estelle Lavoie and Julie de Lorimier have been studying traditional Western African dances with masters trained at the national ballets of Guinea and Senegal. Through their work within the company, Hamel, Lavoie and de Lorimier redefine and adapt this language in a contemporary and original fashion.

Héritage de Conakry (Conakry legacy)
This Taafé Fanga piece is built around a dozen rhythms from Guinea and Senegal, where music and dance are inextricable. A rich and energetic dialog develops between percussionists and dancers, and the sounds simply seem to transform into movements that run through the performers' bodies. At times evoking the street parties of Conakry, the show sweeps us along in its whirlwind of African-inspired dances, and the energy reaches its peak when the performers take up dunduns to drum on as they dance.
